Pvt. John Dunning enlisted 24 Oct. 1861 at Hopkinsville, Ky., under Major Hewett for 3 years. Assigned to Company B, 8th Kentucky Infantry. Appears on Company Muster Roll for October 24, 1861 to July 31, 1862. Never paid. Died Nov 19, 1861 at Hopkinsville, Ky.

Pvt. John W. Dunning was the son of Shadrach Dunning and Elizabeth Poole Kenady of Trigg county.

"Confederate Pvt. J. W. Dunning enlisted Oct 24, 1861 in Hopkinsville, Ky. under Major Hewett for 3 years, or war. He was assigned to Company B, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry. Appointed 3rd Cpl Feb 23, 1862.. (He is identified as 2nd Cpl. on a Company Muster Roll dated July 31 to Oct 31, 1862 and on subsequent rolls.)

He was captured at Fort Donelson Feb. 16, 1862 and sent to Camp Morton, In. His name appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War sent from Camp Morton, In. to Vicksburg, Ms. to be exchanged. Roll dated Aug 24, 1862. He was one of the 983 prisoners. He was "Declared exchanged at Aikens Landing, Nov 10, 1862."

J. W. Dunning continued on company muster rolls of the 8th Regiment until the roll of May & June 1864. He is listed as present. Washington did not send papers showing J. W. on a Muster Out Roll or discharged.
