The 103rd General Hospital, England - Wounded by morar shell fragments while fighting inside the city of Leipzig, Germany, Staff Sergeant Guy C. Turner, 21, of Golden Pond KY., is now reovering at this United States Army general hospital in England. His war Surgeon, Captain James P. Swearingen of Shreveport LA, said, "Sgt. Turner is making excellent progress but will finish his convalescing in the United States."
"My platoon was sent forward to secure a bridge," Sgt. Turner said,
" the Germans opened up with mortar fire and I was hit in both legs by

taken by ambulance to an air strip and flow to the hospital. He was
awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Purple Heart by Colonel Hiram S. Yellen,
commanding officer of the hospital. He was previously wounded in
September, 1944. Sgt. Turner entered the Army on October 23, 1943,
at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. In civilian life he was employed by the Eggner
Ferry Toll Bridge of Trigg Co. KY. A brother, Private Oliver E. Turner
is stationed at Camp Atterbury, Ind. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.Y.
Turner reside at Golden Pond.

New Book Chronicles "Hard Living" in Golden Pond.
It took longer than expected, but the story of Lorene Turner Higgins life between the rivers is finally in print. Renie from Golden Pond" which arrived from the publisher Friday, tells the story of Miss Renie's "pretty rugged life" from the 1920's to the 1990's. The book was a major undertaking for the 85 year old Cadiz woman, but she's relieved to see the finished product after a year and a half of work with author Barbara Hillyard.
Reaction has been positive so far from people who've seen the book, Miss Rene said Monday morning. She mailed copies to her grandsons in Michigan on Monday. "My kids have been at me for years" to write the book, Miss Renie said. "They finally talked me into it." She's anxious to see the 500 copies of the book, but she also cant wait to see what her grandchildren think of the book. "Thats what I did it for" she said," They better like it.".
The 168 pages, hardcover book offers a glimpse of her life, including the moonshining operation and outrunning federal agents in Lawton's fast cars. But "Renie from Golden Pond" is more than moonshining. Its about "plain old hard living". she said. Her story includes growing up in the LAnd Between the Rivers and being forced to move when the Tennessee Valley Authority bought the land in the 1960's. Her story includes the lives of her children, Doris and Virgil, and their families.
Her story is one that she hopes will spark memories for others who grew up between the rivers. "People wouldnt believe what we lived on back then," she said.
Miss Renie will be selling and signing copies of "Renie from Golden
Pond" Monday at the Trigg County Library. The book may be available
at other locations. "We just go to work all out on that " she said.
