"The Porter families in America are descendants of three brothers of the House of Campbell in the highlands of Scotland. One of them settling in Pennsylvania, another in Virginia, and still another in Tennessee. From them descended the Porters of their respective states." This quote is taken from Kentucky Biographies collected and published by John Gresham Company of Chicago and Philadelphia, 1896, page 600. Since James Porter was born in Virginia, it is reasonable to assume that he is a descendant of the Scotland Porter brother that settled in that state.
Through documents such as the federal census, land surveys, marriage bond listings, deeds, and cemetery records, we can establish a brief and reasonably accurate history of this family tree. We know that James Porter (1) was born in Virginia on December 12, 1775, and died in Trigg County Kentucky on February 26, 1858. He was married to Sara Gillum who was born in Virginia on September 30, 1793, and died in Trigg County Kentucky on January 10, 1862. Both were buried in a cemetery located on the family farm in Trigg County Kentucky. James married Sara Gillum, according to the records, on August 3, 1831, when he was 56 years old. This leads one to think that he was married to someone else prior to the union with Sara Gillum, however, there are no known documents to support this if it is true. If there was no prior marriage, then some of the older children (including William T.), were born out of wedlock. There were several children born to this union (unions) including James (2), Mary (2), Sara (2), Betty (2), William (2), Joe (2), Robert (2), Elizabeth (2), and there may have been others.
The verbal story told by the descendants of James is that the family lived in the Adairville area of Logan County Kentucky prior to moving to Trigg County Kentucky. Adairville is located near the Kentucky - Tennessee border. The earliest documented evidence of James being in Kentucky is found in the Index To Surveys Logan County, which indicates that James Porter had 400 acres on the Big Whippoorwill on May 31, 1808. The 1810 Federal Census of Logan County Kentucky lists James Porter and indicates he had a wife, seven children, and two black slaves. He would have been 35 years old at that time and also suggests that James may have been married prior to his marriage to Sara Gillum in 1831. The family apparently moved to Tennessee in the 1820s since William T. was born in that state on December 25, 1822. Three children listed as living with James Porter on the 1850 census are also shown as being born in Tennessee. Their ages were shown to be 21, 16, 14, which indicates the family must have been living in Tennessee during 1829, 1834, and 1836.
There are at least two documents that gives the exact location in Tennessee where James and his family lived. The marriage listing for Lydia (3), William T. Porter's (2) oldest daughter, shows that her father and mother were born in Robertson County Tennessee. A deed was also found in the Robertson County archives that list 23 acres of land being sold for sixty nine dollars on November 21, 1849, by William T. Porter to Elijah Dean.
The first documented evidence of James Porter being in Trigg County Kentucky is his recorded marriage to Sara Gillum on August 3, 1831. However, he probably married Sara while visiting relatives in that area. There is a Porter listed on the 1820 Trigg County census which may have been a relative. His first appearance on a Trigg County census was in 1850. This census indicates that he was a farmer, however, there is no documented evidence that James ever owned land in Trigg County. There are no listed deeds in his name recorded in the Trigg County Clerk's archives which begins in the year 1820.
William Tuler Porter (2) was born in Tennessee on December 25, 1822, and died in Trigg County Kentucky on August 6, 1896. He married Susannah Braunson (as listed in the Trigg County Marriage Bonds 1800 - 1900), on June 11, 1950. Susanah (tomb stone inscription) was born January 20, 1838, and died on July 15, 1907. The 1850 census indicates that she was born in Tennessee, however, later census lists her birth state as Kentucky. Both William and Susanah were buried in a cemetery on the family farm in Trigg County. Susanah's death notice reads, "Mrs. Susan Ann Porter, the widow of the late Wm. Porter, died Monday morning at the residence of her son, Mr. I. B. Porter, near Maggie of paralysis. She was about 70 years of age and was a member of the Methodist Church of Oakland. She is survived by three sons and two daughers as follows: I. B. Porter, and Miss Maggie Porter of this county, Wm. Porter and Wilford Porter of Florida and Mrs. Buck Griffie of Christian County."
The Trigg County, Kentucky, Vital Statistics, Marriages 1874-1910, Deaths 1861 + 1874-1910, by Barbara Smith, has the following entry: 368. Susan Porter, white, age 74, female, widow, housekeeper, d. 21 Jul 1907 of paralysis. Dau. of Thedore & Annie Ritter, b. KY. (hh #270-271 on 1900 census, Longhollow & Roaring Springs Prect..
Susanah's mother is listed as Anaca Writer (should be Ritter) in the 1850 census and as a member of William T. Porter's household. We can assume that Grandmother Ritter may not have been held in very high esteem by the family since there are no records that she existed other than her name on the 1850 and 1860 census. Her name does not appear in the old family Bible nor on any deeds. The 1850 census indicates that she was born in Tennessee and was 35 years old, which suggests that she must have been born in 1815. There is no record of her death or where she was buried, however, Dovard Porter (4) believe she was buried in the Porter Cemetery on the family farm in Trigg County Kentucky. She died sometime after the 1860 census was taken. There is a picture of her that was given to Burnett W. Porter, Jr. (5) by Leon Clark (4), the son of Maggie Porter Clark (3), that is in good condition.
Six children were born to William and Susanah and their names are L. A. (3), Lydia (3), James (3), Issac (3), Robert Wilford (3), and Maggie Lucretia (3). The Trigg County, Kentucky Death Records (1852 - 1862) by Barbara Smith, published in 1996 by Simmons Historical Publications, has the following entry: 1219 - L. A. Porter, white, age 3, female, d. 21 Feb 1858. Cause not shown. Dau. of W. T. Porter. Lydia married William Burgess “Buck” Griffey, and their children's names are Bergess (4), Sudia (Caraland) (4), Anna (Robey) (4), Lydia (Fiese) (4), Will (4), Maggie (Peniger) (4), and Floyd (4). James Porter's children names are William (4), Henry (4), George (4), and Isobell (4). Robert Wilford's children names are Anna Mae (4), Sadie (4), and Warren (4). Maggie Porter married Mark Clark and they had one son named Leon (4).
Issac Burnett Porter (3) was born in Trigg County Kentucky on November 21, 1866, and died on the family farm in the same location, on May 16, 1930. He married Lelia Thomas Dearing on January 17, 1898. Thomas was born in Trigg County Kentucky on September 16, 1876, and died on the family farm on February 12, 1938. Issac and Thomas were buried in the East End Cemetery, in Cadiz, Kentucky. Thomas' parents, Calvin and Susan Dearing, are also buried in the same cemetery. There were 12 children born to this union and their names are Burnett (4), Lilly (4), Charles (4), Ewing (4), Lottie (4), Beulah (4), Dovard (4), Helen (4), Ernest (4), Stan (4), Fred (4), and Hugh (4). Ernest died during early infancy.
Most of Issac's friends called him "Ike" and he was well thought of and respected in the community. He was a rather short man, had a quick temper, would fight if provoked, but was ready to shake hands following any confrontation. For example, he shot a man who was threatening him, and later hired him after the man recovered. He and Thomas were Christians, and helped establish the Oakland Methodist Church.
Ike was a good farmer, using crop rotation, natural fertilizer,and innovative ideas such as planting fruit trees in wooded areas to protect them. He gave of his time and equipment to help maintain the county roads each year, and the community post office, named Maggie, was located on the Porter farm. The post office was named aftrer Ike's younger sister Maggie Lucretia. In additon to farming, Ike operated a store on the farm to help meet the family needs. He and Thomas established a school on their farm for the older children, to augment the public school, which was only open six months each year. The teacher took room and board in the Porter home and taught during the months of January and February.
Ike was a loving father according to his children, however, Lottie is reported to have been afraid of him. The other children knew that he would use corporal punishment, if necessary, but were not afraid of him. According to Burnett (4), his father only hit him one time and that was for something he didn't do. The story goes that Ewing (4) was misbehaving and Maggie (3), Ike's sister who was still living at home, said "slap that youngen Ike" and he slapped Burnett who happened to be standing the nearest. Burnett said that his father never apologized for slapping him even after he learned that he had slapped the wrong child.
Thomas was a very pretty woman, dark eyes and hair, with a quiet disposition. She did not have a formal education and could not read nor write, but was able to sign her name. Her lack of education was due to her father requiring the children to work in the fields, since he was a sharecropper. Thomas, as she was usually called, was a hard worker and had an excellent knowledge of farming, which was a big help to Ike. She took care of his mother when she was unable to care for herself, as well as her own parent who lived near by on the Porter farm. Her love for children was reflected in her bearing a large family, and she even attempted to adopt a child (Douglas McFarland) after Issac past away. She was unable to keep the baby due to his having serious medical problems.

The children of Issac and Thomas have been very close in their relationships with each other and this has continued to a lesser degree with their descendants. Even though this was a very large family, there are only two male Porter descendants in the 7th. and 8th. generations to carry on the Porter family name as of March 1998. They are the sons of David Porter (Matthew), and William Porter (Brent). There is a possibility that Wayne Porter, the son of Ewing and Gladys Porter, may have a male descendant, however, there has not been any contact with this family line for several years.
The first land purchased in Trigg County that made up the family farm was by William T. Porter. There are no records of his father (James) ever buying any land in Trigg county. William purchased 383 acres of land on March 12, 1852, from Mary Wilson for the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars. In 1853, William bought 289 acres from Ed and Jane Bradshaw for the sum of seven hundred twenty two dollars and fifty cents. However, on May 30, 1855, William sold 289 acres of land to his brother James C. Porter for the sum of five hundred ninety seven dollars and fifty cents. William regains title in later years when James failed to pay off what he owed for the land. The 1860 census of Trigg County shows William having the figure 2000 (land) and 1000 (property) which must be the estimated monetary value of his worth since the recorded deeds shows that he owned only 513 acres at that time. He had purchased a total of 802 acres but had sold the 289 acres to his brother and another 50 acres to a Wilson Baker. The last land purchased by William T. Porter was from Sam Tinsley in 1885. From 1852 to 1966 there were 79 actions (buying, selling, mortage's, deed's, to heirs, etc.) that are recorded in the Trigg County Clerk's office files. The farm did exceed over 1000 acres at one time but has diminished in size following the death of Issac B. Porter in 1930. Some of the farm is still owned by the Dovard Porter (4) family.
The Porter home was made of logs covered with clapboards and consisted of a parlor, two hallways, livingroom, and kitchen downstairs, and a hallway and two bedrooms upstairs. There were two fireplaces down stairs and two upstairs which provided the heat for the home and a wood burning stove in the kitchen for cooking the meals. There was a carbide plant that produced gas for lights and water was supplied by two cisterns although there was also a well in the stable lot that was used primarily for cooling food and milk. Thomas Porter and Joe Lancaster cut a door in the kitchen wall with a crosscut saw in order to have access to the cistern and water. The water was drawn with a bucket attached to a pulley-wheel. Burnett Sr. enlarged this cistern during the 1940s and it was probably the largest man made cistern in Trigg County. Most of the dirt was brought to the surface in a 55 gallon barrel, mounted to a pulley wheel and pulled by the family favorite mule "Ole Allen."
Other buildings on the farm included a stable, several tobacco barns, several chicken houses, five dwelling houses, three shops, store, several smoke houses for curing meat, shed for washing clothes, and a garage. The stable was built in 1905 and housed favorite mules - horses such as Kit, Allen, Celium, Doc, Dixie, Nan, Dave, and Ider. The store was orginally to meet the family needs but grew into stocking for the neighbors. Many of the neighbors never paid their bills which contributed to Issac Porter going into debt. The store house was later used as a dwelling house which some of Issac's children lived in for a while including Dovard and Charles.
Chestnut Grove, the school where most of the Porter children attended, was located approximately three miles from the Porter farm. It was a one room building made of calp boards, with two front doors, six windows, and was heated by a cast iron potbellied stove. The first through the eighth grades were taught and Lilly Porter Randolph served as one of the teachers. In additon to this facility, the older Porter children were also taught in a small one room building located on the Porter farm. It was near the store building and across the lane in front of the home place. The teacher lived in the Porter home and received room and board during the school period of January and February, since the county schools (including Chestnut Grove ) were only open for six months each year. A few neighbors children also attended the Porter school. Chestnut Grove remained open until around 1944, and was closed when the schools in Trigg county were consolidated.
The Christmas decorations for Chestnut Grove were kept by the Porter family and included a Santa Claus suit, tensile, crepe paper ropes, angel hair, and a large, red, paper bell, to hang on the tree. Burnett Porter, Sr., played Santa Claus several times for the Christmas programs at the school, and performed other chores such as cleaning out the cistern each year. Other than the school building, the only other resources located on the property were the cistern, and two out-houses which were usually turned over each Halloween. A "pie or box supper" was occasionally held at the school to raise funds for supplies and short trips. The girls would bring pies or box lunches to be auctioned off and the person that bid the highest was given the privilege of eating the pie or lunch with the girl that brought it. The Homer Randolph family, including "Boots" provided music a few times at the school to raise money.
One story told by the children of Issac Porter was about a Sam Young (believed to have been shorten from Younger) that lived for awhile on the family farm. It was believed, by some members of the family, that Sam was one of the outlaw Younger brothers that rode with Frank and Jessie James. He was shot by Issac when Young threaten to harm him. After recovering from the wound, Issac hired him and he remained on the farm until he was killed by a man name McKinny. He was buried in the cemetery on the Porter farm in an unmarked grave.
While looking for data on the Porter Family in Russellville, Kentucky, Burnett Porter, Jr., ask the Director of the Logan County Archieves why the James Gang was in that area when they allegedly robbed the local bank. The Director said that the James bothers had an uncle and other relatives by the names of Traubers and Hite living in Logan county who they occasionally visited. The Porters of Trigg County are related by marriage to the Traubers and Hites in Logan County, Kentucky. Could it be that Sam Young was indeed a member of the infamous Youger and James Gangs?? Did he know the Porter Family in Trigg county through the Traubers and Hites and was he hiding from the law on the Porter family farm??
The research on James S. Porter and his descendants was started in 1988 and has continued over the past ten years. The genealogy data includes this over-all narrative on the Family Tree, individual biographies, pictures, documents, and voice recordings. A lot of work/time/expense, and effort were required to develop this family history. However, it is very gratifying to know that we now have a history, that at least didn't exist since 1775, due to my efforts. I hope that one of my descendants will continue this family history after I have "crossed over Jordan".
