CLEATUS SMILEY

Cleatus Woodrow Smiley, 82, Wayne Drive, died at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 1996, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maddux Funeral Home, Hopkinsville, with the Revs. Bob Lowery and Hank Cayce officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

A native of Christian County, he was born Dec. 22, 1913, son of the late Oscar and Mattie Reese Smiley. He was a retired farmer and a member and songleader of Bainbridge Grove Baptist Church.

William M. Smiley, town marshal, was shot here tonight while attempting to
arrest James and Jordan Hughes, farmers of near town, for drunkenness.
James, who it is thought fired the fatal shot made his escape in the
darkness, but Jordan is in custody.  A posse is in pursuit and it is thought
that James will be captured before morning.  Great excitement prevailed.
Mr. Smiley had been on the duty only two weeks and was a vigilant and
fearless officer.  He leaves a wife and three children.

Mrs. Opal Juanita Smiley, 51, Hopkinsville, Ky.
Died Sunday 20 April 1969 in Baptist Hospital, Nashville, Tn.
Born 3 September 1917 in Kentucky, daughter of the late Thomas Carlos Wilson and Mrs. Pearl Ratliff Wilson, who lives in Hopkinsville.
Member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
Survivors: husband, Ralph A. Smiley; son, Clyde Ray Smiley of Mayfield; daughter, Mrs. Bobbie Cummings of Hopkinsville; brother, Clyde Thomas Wilson of Los Angeles, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Loman Cansler and Mrs. Charles Adams of Detroit, Mrs. Burlin McKnight of Hopkinsville and Mrs. Vaughn Smith of Hillsboro, Ill.; six grandchildren.
Services: Tuesday 22 April 1969, burial in Green Hill Mem. Gardens. Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home.
