BELLE POTTER
Belle Potter a fourteen year old colored girl, living on the farm of Mrs. Elizabeth Rabold, three miles from this city, was shot late Saturday evening and instantly killed by a negro man named Will Smith.
Smith had been on the premises all day, and was fooling with a shotgun, which he pointed toward the girl, saying he was going to shoot her, when it went off, causing her death.
It is claimed that the shooting was accidental and that the negro man had no intention of doing the girl bodily injury. The
Coroner has held an inquest, but has not yet returned proof to the Circuit Court Clerk and the particulars are rather meager.
