CHARLEY BOYD

December 28, 1926
Charley Boyd Claimed By Death
Former Teacher And Popular Rural Carrier Victim Of Cancer
Member of Prominent Family And Son Of Former Sheriff Of Trigg County
Mr. Charley Boyd, for many years a leading teacher of Trigg county and for some fifteen years past a rural mail carrier of the county, died at ten o'clock on December 28th at the home of Mr. L. H. Tompkins near Canton.
For some two years Mr. Boyd had been troubled with cancer. He had consulted many physicians and specialists at home and in the larger cities. A number of operations were performed but none of them seemed to render any permanent relief. Two weeks before his death he returned from a stay of more than a month in Nashville, and he had an idea that he had been given permanent treatment. However, his weakened condition could not stand the severe ordeal through which he was passing, and the end came as friends had expected for some time.
Mr. Boyd was born May 1st, 1863 being past sixty three years of age, and was a son of the late Thomas Boyd, for a number of years, Sheriff of Trigg county and in his day one of the outstanding citizens of Wallonia section and the entire county of Trigg.
For some twenty years he engaged in teaching, and during all that time was classed among the leading instructors of the county, and taught in many neighborhoods. About fifteen years ago he was given appointment as rural mail carrier of the county. For several years he carried the mail on route six. Later he was transferred to route eight, and held the position on the route at the time of his death.
He was a gifted writer. For a number of years he was a regular contributor to THE RECORD under the name of "Rusticus." His writings were widely read, and he always wrote along lines of special interest to the people. He had written but little for publication since the malady that brought him to a premature grave had overtaken him.
Of a family of ten children, Hugh Boyd, of Arkansas, is the only surviving brother. Mr. Boyd was never married but for some years had owned a small place near Tuggleville and resided on it.
The remains were taken to the old family burying ground near Wallonia on the 29th and there consigned to the last resting place by the side of loved ones last gone before.
