THOMAS BAILEY

On Monday last, Thomas Bailey, a young man about twenty-three years old, rode a mule into a pond near Walnut Grove; the mule got his leg tangled in a wire fence running through the pond, and floundered about in deep water considerably.
Seeing the mule was hung and would probably throw young Bailey off, Mr. Phelps told him to jump of the mule and save himself.
The young man got off the mule but was unable to get out of the pond. He cried for help, and into the water Tom Phelps plunged, got hold of young Bailey and Bailey got hold of him. They went down together to the bottom with Phelps making all possible efforts to get out and save the young man but he couldn't. To save himself, Phelps was compelled finally to break loose from him and get out as best he could. He did so but the unfortunate young man never rose from the third sinking to the bottom.
