Kentucky New Era
Hopkinsville, Kentucky
Wednesday August 1, 1917
The county exemption board for the army draft today issued a call for three hundred men to report forexamination from which it is believed that Christian county's quota of87 men can be made up. No announcement of an appointment to fill this place made vacant by 0. H. Anderson's resignation, has been received, but Sheriff Smith and Dr. J. H. Rice, the other two members, are going-ahead just the same.
Below the New-Era gives the list of the men included in this first call. They are to report in lots of one hundred, the first hundred reporting nextMonday, the second hundred on Tuesday and the third hundred on Wednesday.
The men are to report at 9 o'clock each morning at the circuit court room, where the examinations will be made. These examinations will be made just as rapidly as possible. For this Dr. Rice asks for four men to volunteer their services, these to act as clerks to the doctors who will make the examination. The men to be examined will be stripped and the test will be very rigid. Dr. Rice will supervise the examination in person. E. H. Higgins has volunteered to be one of these clerks and capable business men, who write good hands, are the ones wanted.
Several young ladies responded to the call for help and are busy today sending out the notices by mail to the three hundred men in the first call and doing other important work in connectionwith the draft.
Those
included in the first call are:
