Mine Accident Kills Crofton Man

A Christian County resident has died of injuries suffered in a strip mine accident in Hopkins County.
Alan Keith Hargis, 35, Crofton, died at about 7 a.m. Thursday (January 7, 1999) at a small mine operation off Stoney Point Road near Dalton in the western area of
Hopkins County.
According to the Madisonville Messenger, Hopkins County Deputy Coroner James Matthews reported that Hargis was operating a highwall drill when a portion
of the mine wall fell onto the cab of the drill, trapping Hargis.
He was reportedly dead at the scene and was trapped in the wreckage for about 45 minutes. The accident is under investigation by the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals and federal mining authorities.
Hargis was reportedly working for Number 1 Contractors.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Crofton Christian Church, with the Revs. Mike Van Heymingen and Dan Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Ridgetop Cemetery, Crofton. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Saturday
at Hughart and Beard Funeral Home, Crofton.
A native of Christian County, he was born March 6, 1963, the son of Bobby Glenn and Eva Glenn Smith Hargis, Hopkinsville. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Michelle Hamby Hargis; a son, Austin Keith Hargis, the home; a daughter, Alannah Michelle Hargis, the home; a brother, Gary Hargis, Hopkinsville, and grandparents
Jewell (Granny) Hargis, Crofton, and John E. Smith, Hopkinsville, and a step grandmother, Melva Smith, Hopkinsville.
