Whitnell Jenkins Cemetery

Olney Quadrangle   Latitude 37.10'17"N Longitude 87.49'32"W

Western Ky. Turnpike Exit 13 to Hwy. 293 N. 1.5 miles to Princeton- Olney Rd., 1.9 miles to cemetery (50 yds. past white house on the right) Cemetery located approximately 50 yds. off the road.

There are 38 graves in the cemetery with some form of head and foot stones. Twenty-three of these graves are marked with crude sandstones with no inscription, two others have markings, and there are 13 monuments.

The cemetery's thirteen monuments are professionally masoned. Six of these appear to be of the same type stone and inscribed by the same stonemason, as shown by the formation of numbers and letters.

note: An 1879 Act of Congress authorized the government to provide headstones to soldiers and veterans buried in private cemeteries who died between 1861 and about 1903

Two crude stones with markings are:
WK
b. 1794    d. 1875
This stone is located 25 ft. behind William Jenkins monument This could be William Kilgrow/Kilgore.
Although the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses give his age as 54, 65, and 75.
By the tombstone, his birth year would be 1795 or 1796

W + Jenkins
Died + Nov. 5 + 1849

note: After close examination of the marks between the W. and Jenkins.
Died, and Nov. 5 and 1849, I determined these are actual plus marks.
I believe this is the first stone for W. W. Jenkins, due to the date and the location
of the sandstone (facing the footstone of W. W. Jenkins monument)
