I have wonderful childhood memories of going to this cemetery every year.
There was a graveyard cleaning and a potluck dinner with cousins, aunts,
uncles, my parents and grandparents.
All of the children played, some of us sliding down the bank from the cemetery
to the spring area on a broken down cardboard box, laughing and squealing with delight.
I can still recall the smell of the wild peppermint growing around the spring.
I have some peppermint growing in my yard and I can pinch off a piece and instantly
I am back at the graveyard cleanings at Williamson Cemetery.
All of the men young and old would work cutting the briars and weeds away from the graves.
The women stayed busy getting the dinner set out and keeping an eye on the children.
There would be fried chicken, country ham,
all kinds of vegatables and pies and cakes of every description.
I think this tradition is mostly a thing of the past and
it is a shame.
It seemed to make families closer and stronger.
Most of all I feel the graveyard cleanings gave children a respect for their ancestors
and the cemeteries, and a better sense of who they were and where they came from.
That special connection we are all looking for.
Flavy A. Williamson White was my great-grandmother.
William Austin Williamson & Willia Victoria (Blackburn) Williamson, my g-g-grandparents.
